Alfred Spivack, MD, is a “2008 Art in the Round Contest” participant.
General Statement:
I am an 80-year-old Emeritus Clinical Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine. The study of art has been a needed supplement to the critical focus demanded by patient care and teaching of medicine.
I began my studies in ceramics under the direction or Rory Nakata, Director of Ceramics and Sculpture at the College of San Mateo, in San Mateo, California, in 1990. My work in the past 8 years has focused on developing the techniques of fusing art and dichroic glass to ceramics using an approach to the research not unlike my studies in clinical medicine.
Publications/Resume:
The unique technique I employ was published in an article by me in Ceramics Monthly, February 2007, and was included as a chapter in the American Ceramic Society’s recent publication, “Surface Decoration: Finishing Techniques”. Read “The Fusion of Clay and Dichroic Glass” by Alfred Spivack.
My work has been selected for numerous juried shows.
Although, initially, I was told of the incompatibility of ceramics and glass, it has been a wonderful creative experience to develop and share the results of my work and leave a small footprint for others to follow.
