Artist’s Statement: I attribute the simplicity of my forms to a desire that my vessels have a whole and graceful presence. I want my work to make a bold and prominent statement, yet reserve restful composure.
Artistic Medium: Ceramics. What brings me back to the thrown vessel time after time is the possibility of capturing the poise and vibrancy of clay as it expands outwards on the wheel. I’ve been working with the lidded vessel for the past fourteen years. I’m interested in giving voice to subconscious experiences through free drawing on the thrown vessel. By using the thrown form as canvas, images are influenced by the same intuitive tools used to create three-dimensional as well as two-dimensional expressions. The particular curves of the thrown piece influence the movement of the pencil over soft clay.
Artistic Resume: 1992, BFA, Painting and Ceramics, Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio. My work has been acquired by the San Angelo Museum of Art, the Wheaton College Museum, has received several awards, and is currently shown in New Zealand, Australia, the Caribbean, and across the continental United States.
